No place is void of G-d; He is present wherever we let Him in. In Hasidic thought, sleep represents a numbness to our own yearning for the Divine. The gate of Heaven summons us to open ourselves to G-d. Jacob goes to sleep on rough ground surrounded by stones. Only when he awakens from his slumber does he become aware of the presence of G-d in that place.
