A person should always be soft as a reed and not hard as a cedar.

Avot d’Rabbi Natan 41

“‘A person should always be as soft as a reed, and not as hard as a cedar.’ A reed bends with the winds that buffet it, and when the winds are still, it returns to its place; therefore, the reed merits to be used as a pen for writing a Torah scroll. But a cedar does not remain standing when the fierce southern wind blows, it uproots the tree and overturns it.”
